Everyone has had some experience with food. In order to expand my understanding of awe, especially dealing with women, I want to interview 5-6 women. In my interview I will ask them to recall their experiences, food that means something special to them, if they cook, or even like cooking, etc... I also would like to do an experiment with food. I want to find a dish they have never heard of before, possibly a cultural dish, and record their experience. I think this will help broaden my understanding of food and the mundane, and also women's connections to food.
A few days later...
One of the purposes of my project is to see if there is a connection between literature and reality. By interviewing these different women I am hoping to figure out how they truly view food and awe. I have choosen 3 people to interview: an english professor focused on modern literature, Professor Watts; an art major, Amelia; and a free spirit, mom, and food junkie, Sadie. I have a few other ideas in mind, but if anyone has suggestions for other people to talk to that would be helpful.
I really want this to be focused so I decided that I will explain the idea of my paper, and share a personal moment of connection with food, so they can understand what I am looking for. I also have a list of questions that I want to focus on:
- Why is food a source of nostalgia?
- Why do people make that connection between food and memories?
- If food hadn't had been there would that experience still be as influential?
- Do women have a stronger connection with food and awe than men do?
- What is it about women that connects them with food? Social expectations?
- Do you eat to survive or find joy in eating, or cooking?
